and her undying support for Planned Parenthood. For those who don't know, Lena Dunham is a writer and comedian, and lead actress in her own show, Girls. She also happens to be one of Planned Parenthood’s major celebrity supporter. Last year in October, Lena Dunham called on her friends and fans to help raise awareness for Planned Parenthood and their Women are Watching campaign. At around this time, there was a vote for midterm elections and Lena wanted to raise awareness for girls to go out and vote. She said in a video how “girls want change. Girls are change,” to try to encourage girls to be the difference. To be that, they had to go out and vote. As some may know, there has been call for the government to vote to defund Planned Parenthood. Since this vote is so relevant, I wanted to bring back an article about Lena Dunham
Women Are Watching campaign was made to get girls to go and vote and is sponsored by Planned Parenthood. They want to empower women and make them feel that they matter, because they do. Lena partnered with this campaign and made T-shirts that read
“Lena hearts Planned Parenthood” ” and on the back has the Women are Watching logo. Lena enlisted her celebrity friends to help spread the word. Many celebrities like Mindy Kaling, Rashida Jones, Amy Poehler, and more, took to Instagram and Twitter to post selfies of them wearing the shirt in support. Lena Dunham is such an important person to this cause and someone to look up to. She loves Planned Parenthood and wanted to partner with them to help raise awareness for the vote because she knew that “women’s health and rights [were] at stake.

In the current day, there is talk of another vote to defund Planned Parenthood. I wanted to bring up this article, and Lena, so it can remind us of what Planned Parenthood is really about. They are about promoting women’s health through affordable health care, and if the government votes to defund them, our rights as female are yet again at risk. Leading to more inequality between men and women (i.e. men having the right to choose what to do with their body.)
This article does a nice job of using rhetoric throughout. The author of this article used a technique referenced in Jay Heinrich’s book Thank You For Arguing, in the chapter “make them listen.” Throughout the article, the author talked up or bragged about Lena and built up her credibility by saying how she’s been supporting Planned Parenthood for years, even before her fame and success. And because Lena Dunham is pretty well-known, lots of girls are able to look up to her and see how they might share the same virtues. Also, it uses pathos to appeal to girls because it talks about how we are the change and we can make a difference if we vote.
