Planned Parenthood.
What’s the first thing you think of when you hear those words?
Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that “delivers vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide." , by giving sex education to families, young adults, affordable contraception such as: birth control and condoms, STD/HIV screenings for men and women, and the most controversial of them all, abortion for women. Some people may be blinded by that l I wanted to bring attention to this organization because not everyone knows what Planned Parenthood is fully about. Planned Parenthood gives affordable health care to young women and men ast s ervice to truly realize everything else this organization provides to our young adult populatio n. So I ’d like to try and change that.

As of recently, Planned Parenthood has been shown negatively in the media and in some Presidential campaigns. There has been protests for the government to defund them because of their involvement with legal abortions. What most people are ignorant to are the other resources Planned Parenthood provides. But what people need to remember is that abortion is a choice, and a right given to women. This right was decided during the Roe v. Wade court case under the privacy law. Any women has the legal right and choice to decide to get an abortion or not, making it fully legal. Planned Parenthood is a safe resource and a very affordable place to receive this service, especially if you’re a young adult. Defunding Planned Parenthood would not only take away a reliable resource to women but all young, and old, adults. Both men and women can use Planned Parenthood, which I think is very overlooked.
If defunding goes through and Planned Parenthood gets shut down, I believe it could be detrimental to a lot of young adults. What worries me is what the future holds with this non-profit organization. As a young female adult, having a resource like Planned Parenthood is reassuring because if I ever need it, it'll always be there. They are so resourceful and are there to help us, young adults, in need. What really scares me is how this might just be the beginning of rights being taken away. If they defund Planned Parenthood they are taking away so many things that are beneficial to young adults, especially us females. If they take away a safe, affordable source for abortion, what does the future hold for scared girls, and boys, needing help? It might lead to our right being taken away from us. Remember: our body, our choice. In a time when feminism is on the rise, taking this right away only strengthens their case of inequality between genders. Planned Parenthood does so much other than just abortions, that are helpful for all young adults, and we shouldn’t let our personal feelings, opinions, religion, etc, get in the way of those who really need this resource.
So I write to say this:
Before you go forming an opinion and jumping right to defunding, keep an open mind when it comes to this non-profit organization. Try to put personal beliefs aside and try to see what great things they do, especially for young adults. And remember: our body, our choice. And that goes for everyone, all genders and all ages.
